Environmental Planning Consultant

Lepus Consulting works extensively across England supporting the development of Local Plans — the strategic blueprints that shape how towns, cities, and rural areas evolve over the next 15 years.
Local Plans are far more than documents; they are instruments of change that influence climate action, housing delivery, infrastructure development, biodiversity protection, green infrastructure and community wellbeing.


As an Environmental Planning Consultant, you will support the preparation and review of Local Plans and environmental policies, helping our clients navigate the complex planning reforms underway. This role offers a unique opportunity to be involved in placemaking at scale — working on projects that shape the future of communities across the country.


Responsibilities

  • Support the preparation, review, and consultation stages of Local Plans and related environmental policies.
  • Assist with Sustainability Appraisals (SA) and Strategic Environmental Assessments (SEA) to ensure compliance and embed sustainability principles.
  • Conduct research, data collection, and policy analysis to inform planning and environmental assessments.
  • Interpret and manage spatial data using GIS software (e.g., QGIS, ArcGIS) to support evidence bases and mapping requirements.
  • Prepare and help present reports, consultation materials, and technical documents for clients, stakeholders, and the public.
  • Liaise with local planning authorities, statutory consultees, developers, and community groups as part of project delivery.
  • Maintain awareness of ongoing planning reforms, government housing targets (e.g., 1.5 million homes over five years), and environmental legislation.
  • Participate in professional development activities and contribute to knowledge sharing within the team.


Experience

  • Degree (or equivalent) in Town & Country Planning, Environmental Planning, Environmental Science, or a related discipline.
  • Working towards or holding RTPI membership is desirable.
  • Competency in spatial interpretation and use of GIS software such as QGIS or ArcGIS.
  • Understanding of the UK planning system, especially Local Plan preparation and environmental assessments.
  • Strong research, analytical, and written communication skills.
  • Good organisational skills, with the ability to manage workload and meet deadlines under supervision.
  • Team player with a proactive attitude and eagerness to learn and contribute.

Ecologist

We are seeking a motivated ecologist to take a leadership role at Lepus specialising in BNG but also carrying out protected species surveys and contributing to wider Lepus projects. In this role you will use your ecological expertise to deliver a range of projects that exceed client expectations and contribute toward your passion for nature's recovery.



Alongside colleagues, you will be responsible for the management and safe delivery of complex, high-profile and interesting projects, on time and on budget, working with clients, consultees, collaborators and sub-contractors, where required.



Responsibilities

  • Strategic assessments of land parcels to establish high level BNG risks and opportunities
  • Delivery of BNG assessments (including UKHabs field survey and metric) for developments and landowners
  • Create Habitat Management and Monitoring plans, including monitoring/verification visits
  • Stakeholder consultation
  • Protected species surveys
  • Use your experience to support ecology deliverables such as Ecological Impact Assessments / Habitats Regulations Assessments & SANG and SANG studies
  • Report production and technical review/authorisation to ensure quality standards
  • Deliver BNG training to a range of stakeholders, clients and collaborators
  • Efficient and professional client relationship management
  • Project management (including budgetary and resource planning of projects)



Experience

  • 2-4 years of working in a consultancy,  with some knowledge and/or experience of delivering BNG projects
  • Extensive practical experience of UKHabs survey methodology in a variety of habitats/development contexts
  • Knowledge of the principles and application of BNG in a commercial setting, including measurement tools
  • Delivery of protected species surveys
  • Application of Small Sites and Biodiversity Metrics
  • Design and delivery of BNG services including onsite and offsite gain, strategic BNG to inform land sale/purchase risk/opportunity modelling, use of metric and field assessment
  • Report writing and technical review
  • Experience of Ecological Impact Assessment, Habitat Regulations Screening Reports and Management Plans
  • Client liaison, management & project management experience



Qualifications

  • Masters degree or extensive transferrable skills in a related discipline
  • Professional membership (CIEEM and/or IEMA)
  • Critical thinking and application of ecological/environmental knowledge to achieve the best possible outcomes for people and wildlife
  • Ideally experienced and licensed to carry out protected species surveys



Principal Landscape Consultant

 

We are currently seeking a Principal Landscape Consultant with strong credentials to join and support the growth of our Landscape team. This is an exciting role offering the opportunity to work on a range of projects, and with an ever-growing portfolio of clients.



 The role would suit a self-motivated individual, with good technical skills looking to practice

within a fast paced but friendly consultancy. The ideal candidate will provide high-quality landscape planning consultancy services commensurate with a minimum of 5 years relevant professional experience (of which 2 years should be post Chartership experience) and have a recognised specialism in one or more of the following areas: landscape and visual impact assessments and appraisals, landscape character assessments and/or landscape planning and green

infrastructure studies.


Responsibilities

  • Developing and building a landscape planning team to complement the existing team.
  • Planning and leading a wide range of landscape planning-related services to current industry guidance and best practice.
  • Provide high-level technical guidance and advice in relation to specialist area.
  • Producing high-quality landscape reports and advice on time and within budget.
  • Managing medium to large-scale/complex projects from submission of quotes and tenders, to client liaison and delivery of landscape services.
  • To maintain a good level of competency using GIS, CAD (BricsCAD / AutoCAD), and Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign) to produce high-quality drawings and presentation material.
  • Leading client meetings on behalf of the company.
  • Managing project staff and sub-consultants on their own projects and project phases.
  • Ensuring compliance with administrative, financial, and other business processes.
  • Managing relationships with clients, stakeholders, and statutory agencies.
  • Cross-selling company services and developing new opportunities with new and existing clients.
  • Undertaking business development and marketing activities in consultation with senior staff.
  • Supporting the development of publicity/marketing information.


Managerial Responsibilities

To undertake the management of projects, systems, and staff to a high professional standard and at an appropriate level, including:

  • Meeting profitability targets for projects and project elements for which they are the appointed project manager.
  • Ensuring line-managed staff meet project management requirements for projects and project elements for which they are responsible.
  • Ensuring the project management system is updated in line with Company requirements.
  • Line management of staff
  • Management of own (and line-managed staff) time in line with company targets.
  • Representing the regional landscape planning team at staff meetings.
  • Training and mentoring of junior staff.
